Remember in prayer those with spiritual struggles and those absent from our regular assemblies. Also, remember those with ongoing physical struggles.

Learning patience can be painful. Remember Abimelek? He wanted to be the leader of his mother’s clan. So he asked, “Which is better to have all seventy of Jerub-Baal’s (Gideon)sons rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember, I am your flesh and blood.” He was the oldest of 70.

Letting power go to his head, he hired reckless scoundrels. He went to Ophrah, the place of his father’s home (I can see his father was very busy, but his mother -70 brothers, she was even busier!!! He had concubines on the side to account for all these brothers.)and murdered his seventy brothers. Jotham, a young brother, fled.

God was not pleased with the killing of all those brothers, but He allowed Abimelek to live. After 3 years, God stirred up the citizens of Shechem against Abimelek to avenge the murder of his brothers.

Abimelek went to the tower and attacked it with the men and women in it. But as he approached the entrance to the tower to set it on fire, A woman dropped an upper millstone on his head and cracked his skull. He called his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and kill me, so that they can’t say, ‘A woman killed him.’ ” So his servant ran him through, and he died.

Thus God repaid the wickedness that Abimelek had done to his father by murdering his seventy brothers. God also made the people of Shechem pay for all their wickedness. The curse of Jotham, the son of Jerub-Baal, came on them.

Jothan was patient.
